Pullman-Moscow Count, Saturday, December 15, 2001

With good weather came a good Count Day.  The unofficial results clearly produce both our second highest ever number of species and also individuals -  64 species, plus one race and 9,755 individual birds.  BOLD species are new records for the count.   Good job to our hardy birders that were rewarded with a pleasant December day to enjoy such an outing.

Lewiston-Clarkston Count, Saturday, January 5, 2002

We had a very good day ending up with a total of 85 species plus 5 additional during the count week species.  There were also 2 species forms ("Slate-colored" Junco & "Harlan's" Hawk).

Some of the highlights included an immature Gyrfalcon and 2 Dunlin, both counted by the Mann Lake party!  Also present was a Harris's Hawk, presumably the same bird that has been seen on and off since last spring in the Lewiston area. Out of range Harris's Hawks are often assumed to be escapees from falconers. So far, nobody has claimed a missing Harris Hawk but it's origins will probably be considered suspect.  Other good birds included: 2 Eurasian Widgeons, 3 Long-tailed Ducks, a Harris's Sparrow, and 220 Common Redpolls (not unexpected in the good redpoll winter we are experiencing).  Most of the major misses were picked up during count week.  The "Harlan's" Red-tailed Hawk was seen by 2 different observers during count week near Mann Lake & Lapwai (presumably the same bird).

Thanks to all 29 participants for a great effort.
