Pullman-Moscow Count, Saturday, December 14, 2002

Weather, both before and during the count were probably the two biggest factors affecting the outcome of the count. This was the warmest weather for this count in any year since 1971, barely beating out 1972 by a couple of degrees. It was certainly one of the most wet, if not the most wet, CBC during that same period of time. The wind which blew virtually all day kept the birds low, if the rain didn't. The mostly mild dry fall has seemed to keep fall and winter migrants at quite low levels; so the count day change in the weather was not in time to improve that factor.

In spite of the weather, the total number of individual birds was well above the average of the last ten years with 9,062 birds. The 58 species is the second lowest number of species for this count in the last ten years. Probably most remarkable is the fact that this count produced all time high numbers of individuals for ten species (see bold numbers under total column). Since the Barrows Goldeneye is a new species for this count, it also is a new record.

The results of the count are posted on the web at: http://www.birdsource.com   The four letter code for this count is IDMP. With this being our 32nd consecutive count and some results going back to 1914 for this area, there is some fascinating data, if numbers are your thing.  My thanks to our 23 field participants and four feeder watchers for turning in another successful winter event.  Dave Holick, Count Coordinator.

Lewiston-Clarkston Count, Saturday, January 4, 2003

Thanks to all who participated on our 5th count. It was a dreary, rainy day and birds were hard to find. Some land birds, most noticeably sparrows, were low in numbers, possibly more dispersed due to the relatively mild and snow-less late fall/early winter we experienced. Despite the general lack of numbers, we found 91 species, which was a new high for the count by 5 species. Waterfowl numbers were below average but well represented in species with 6 loons and grebes and 19 geese and ducks. Raptors were well represented with a total of 10 species including 4 falcon species but numbers of buteos were low as they have been all fall in the region. Gulls were found in good numbers with over 500 individuals of 5 species due largely to coverage of the Clarkston Landfill this year. New for the count were Pacific Loon, Peregrine Falcon, Glaucous-winged Gull, Western Gull, and Red-naped Sapsucker. Interestingly 19 species were represented by only 1 individual each.
