Pullman-Moscow Count, Saturday, December 16, 2006

Below are the results of the Moscow, Idaho / Pullman, Washington CBC done on Saturday Dec. 16, 2006. Count Day was a very pleasant day to be in the field. A 24-hour period shortly preceding Count Day had high winds gusting to over 60 mph. The month preceding the count was more like winter than normal with significant accumulations of snow by Thanksgiving that remained most of that time. It appears that these factors led to results which while average in numbers, but are quite low for many species and record highs for just a few. The individual numbers in bold are record highs and look like the birds large enough to not be blown away were what stayed. Starlings, if blown away, were easily replaced by those blown in. The Clay-colored Sparrow seen the first day of Count Week, has not been seen since then.

This count circle is centered on the Idaho-Washington border resulting in half of the circle being in each state. I extend my appreciation for the efforts and recognition of those participating in the 36th edition of the count.  The results of the count are posted on the web at: http://www.birdsource.com    This count code named "IDMP" has results going as far back as 1914.  If you would like to join us for next year's outing, mark your new calendar for Saturday, December 15, 2007.

Lewiston-Clarkston Count, Saturday, December 30, 2006

The 9th annual Lewiston-Clarkston Christmas bird count was held on December 30th.  Despite the early December cold weather, we had an average species total (89) and several rarities. The weather was beautiful with temperatures just below freezing at the beginning and rising to 40 degrees during the day.

Waterfowl were in generally good numbers represented by 29 species of loons, grebes, geese, ducks and herons. Raptors were below average but an impressive four- Prairie Falcons were located.  Four highlights for the count were also new for the cumulative list: a Thayer’s Gull was observed flying with a large number of adult Herring Gulls along the Clearwater River; a Chipping Sparrow in nearly complete breeding plumage was observed on the Clarkston side; a Clark’s Grebe (or possible Western-Clark’s Hybrid) was seen during count week; and a Red-necked Grebe (which has been present throughout the fall and winter) was located while feeding on both the Snake and Clearwater Rivers. The presence of Lesser Goldfinches is increasing in numbers and were seen in 4- different locations east of Lewiston.  Common Redpolls were seen at two locations.

I extend my thanks to the 22- participants (listed below) who worked hard to make this another successful count and who have helped to document the importance of the Lewiston-Clarkston valley for a large variety of wintering bird species. I also wish to thank the area leaders for their local knowledge contributions and to Palouse Audubon, Canyon Birders, and Idaho Fish and Game (who allowed the use of their facility for an after- count potluck) for their financial support.
